Commissioned by Queen Ranavalona I and designed by French architect Jean Laborde, the palace was originally built from wood. Over the years, it underwent transformations by various political leaders who modernized it with stone, enhancing its strength and stature. However, a fire in 1995 led to its destruction. Today, after restoration, the palace has reopened to the public, now serving as a national museum and symbolizing the nation's rich history.​
